‘They’re going to use every trick in the book’: Warren expects Usyk to target Fury’s scar tissue

With an impending undisputed heavyweight title unification between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk on the verge of taking place next month, Fury’s promoter Frank Warren says they’ll be working to ensure the best officials, including the referee, are called for the assignment as he wants to avoid any and all controversies.

To make his point Warren talks to Sky Sports and points to Usyk’s last fight against Daniel Dubois, where a hotly debated low blow call earned him significant time to recover — something Warren strongly disagreed with.

“The last referee was just a joke. Completely ridiculous the whole thing. Whether it was a low blow or not, the time he gave him and then, when he wanted to fight, he said ‘no, take more time out’.”

Fury is coming off a nasty cut during sparring which pushed the fight from February to May, and Warren suspects that Usyk might use some wily veteran tactics in an attempt to target and reopen the wound.

“I’m sure they’re going to use every trick in the book and that’s boxing isn’t it?” Warren said. “That’s what’s going to happen and Tyson’s a seasoned pro, a seasoned warrior and he knows what he’s got to do.”

With Warren expecting that Usyk is vulnerable to the body, he says Fury is a cerebral enough fighter to take note and take advantage. Whether or not Fury, who’s not known as a prolific body puncher, will be able to actually pull that off remains to be seen, but we’re now just weeks away.
