Benavidez Eyes Light Heavyweight Title in Gvozdyk Fight

David Benavidez is gearing up for his upcoming co-feature bout against Oleksandr Gvozdyk in a clash for the WBC interim light heavyweight title on June 15th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
In what presents a new challenge for Benavidez, who boasts a record of 28-0 with 24 knockouts, he will be stepping up to the 175-pound division to face former WBC light heavyweight champion Gvozdyk, who holds a record of 20-1 with 16 knockouts. This fight will take place on the Gervonta Davis vs. Frank Martin card on PBC PPV on Prime Video.
For the first time in his career, Benavidez will not have the size advantage over his opponent, raising curiosity about how he will adapt to facing a slightly bigger opponent with more power and technical skills.
Throughout his career, Benavidez has dominated his opponents with his high volume punching, benefitting from weaker opposition and his size advantage in the super middleweight division.
Despite the potential move back to the super middleweight division if he loses to Gvozdyk, Benavidez is hopeful for a future showdown with Canelo Alvarez, although negotiations seem uncertain at the moment.
Benavidez’s decision to move up to the 175-pound division may be motivated by financial opportunities, particularly the chance to face the winner of a potential undisputed championship fight between Artur Beteriev and Dmitry Bivol in Saudi Arabia.
Looking ahead to his bout with Gvozdyk, Benavidez remains confident in his training and readiness for the challenge that the former champion poses. With both fighters being part of a highly anticipated card alongside Gervonta Davis, Benavidez believes it will be a significant event for boxing fans.
Reflecting on his past sparring sessions with Gvozdyk, Benavidez sees it as an advantage due to his own improvement and prime condition, contrasting with Gvozdyk’s age and time away from the sport.
As the fight approaches, Benavidez acknowledges the tough task ahead against Gvozdyk, recognizing his opponent’s experience and natural size advantage, which will make it a demanding battle for the undefeated Benavidez alongside his promotional counterpart Gervonta Davis.
